How to Raise Rising Heroes A Guide for Teens

In today’s fast-paced world, where distractions and challenges surround us, being a strong and faithful Muslim teenager has never been more important. The truth is, many forces seekto weaken our resolve and lead us astray. From peer pressure and the allure of instant gratification to the ever-growing addiction to games and screens, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But just imagine what you could achieve this year by rising above these
challenges—becoming a true Rising Hero!

Let’s explore how you can overcome these struggles with the guidance of the Quran and the examples of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)).

The Dangers of Wasting Time in Games

Video games can be fun and even educational at times, but excessive gaming can quickly spiral into an addiction. Spending hours on end in front of a screen can hurt your personality, relationships, and ability to focus on your true goals. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)) reminded us of the importance of using our time wisely when he said:
“The feet of the son of Adam will not move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about five things: how he lived his life, how he utilized his youth, how he earned his wealth, how he spent his wealth, and what he did with his knowledge” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2417).

Consider Muhammad’s story, a shy Muslim teenager who was once consumed by online gaming. Hours spent in virtual worlds distanced him from his family and friends, leaving his schoolwork neglected. But one day, he realized his potential to do more. By dedicating a small portion of his day to learning about Islam and volunteering at his local masjid, he slowly transformed himself into a confident, motivated young leader—eventually becoming a head boy at his school and an inspiration to many. The Impact of Peer Pressure Peer pressure is one of the most difficult challenges teens faces. The desire to fit in can sometimes lead to compromising your values and engaging in harmful behaviors. Allah warns us in the Quran:

“And be patient, for indeed, Allah does not allow the reward of those who do good to be lost.” (Surah Hud 11:115).
Prophet Yusuf (AS) provides a powerful example of resisting peer pressure. When he was
tempted by the wife of Al-Aziz, Yusuf (AS) remained steadfast and said:
“My Lord, prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me.” (Surah Yusuf
12:33).

Just as Yusuf (AS) stood firm in the face of temptation, so can you. Surround yourself with friends who inspire and encourage you to grow closer to Allah. Find a support system in your community or masjid where you can connect with like-minded peers.

The Harm of Greed and Instant Gratification

Greed and the desire for instant gratification are traps that can rob us of contentment and true success. Whether it’s wanting the latest gadgets, clothing, or in-game purchases, these desires can consume our hearts. Allah says in the Quran:
“But you prefer the worldly life, while the Hereafter is better and more enduring.” (Surah Al-
A’la 87:16-17).

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) lived a simple life, often giving away what little he had. Despite his modest means, he inspired millions through his character and generosity. Emulating his example, we can learn to focus on what truly matters and resist the pull of materialism.

Be Inspired to Be Your Best Self

The story of Muhammad, the shy gamer turned Rising Hero, reminds us that it’s never too
late to change. Here are some practical steps to help you rise above the challenges of modern life:

1. Set Clear Goals: Decide who you want to be and make a plan to achieve it.
2. Limit Screen Time: Replace excessive gaming with meaningful activities like
volunteering, reading, or spending time with family.
